Enjoying a last hoo-rah before another tough year of college begins, Kai Sudderson and his friends vacation in Kansas. He takes advantage of the secluded pond system behind his rented cabin to go swimming…in his platypus form. Living with his aunt and uncle, Kai had never met anyone else with the ability to turn into an animal. That is, until he gets himself snared in a beaver trap and a penguin shifter rescues him. Unable to pass up the opportunity for not only knowledge but medical treatment, Kai accompanies his new friend home. There, he meets Dorian Yaris, who—despite being so much older and having such a serious disposition—calls to Kai like no other. When Dorian explains about mates, will Kai consider the bonding thing with someone so obviously different or will he deny everything and return to his former life?

Kai has never met another shifter. He was brought up by his Aunt and Uncle who are not shifters. Only his friends know what he is. He gets caught in a Beaver trap and is rescued by a Penguin and his human mate. He is trying to process this and is in pain when some sort of massive raptor swoops down - his Platypus and human self both agree to run but the pain of his injury means he blacks out. Dorian is an Alpha who doesn't want to lead so is a part of Kontra's pack for now. He scents his mates blood and swoops in on the Penguin and human holding him - what did they do to his mate? His aggression surfaces. He takes Kai to his new room and tends to him, Kai reacts to the mate pull even though he has no idea what it is and submits to Dorian.Upon regaining consciousness and learning a bit about shifters, while still wanting to sniff Dorian, he also learns about mates. And that Dorian is his. And that Dorian is two and a half centuries old. Ok, that's a bit much and he returns to his friends and the kegger party week they have planned. Dorian follows and they mate - so now what? Kai is still in college and Dorian is two and a half centuries old - what does that mean for them? And it seems the warlock in the pack has had a vision of Dorian as an Alpha of an unconventional pack.
And that last bit is really of interest to me. The meeting, relationship and mating really do go off without a hitch so it is all a bit plain sailing once Kai learns what shifters there are and some of the shifter rules. But when an unconventional pack is mentioned and that Dorian will lead them (and he doesn't really want a pack) I was looking forward to more information. But the story just ended there. I really am getting annoyed at the sudden end just when some of the good stuff could be happening. We get build up and then we get dumped out of the story. That's why it gets 3 stars, it ends when the meaty stuff should begin.

Educating the Platypus Kontra Menagerie Book 17 edition by Charlie Richards Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
great short read wish it was longer but it was still a really nice book I can't wait for the next story in this series!
Loved it I hope there's more comeing soon I can't wait to read more from Mantra and his group.) if any of you have not read her books give them a try you will like them.
The series is great but it seems like each story is getting shorter and shorter that they seem rushed this one for example I couldn't get a feel for the characters because the author is trying to throw out as many books as possible for money instead of giving us an actual plot or character backstory in the other stories she barely make any reference to Dorian now all of a sudden he is a main character with hardly any backstory who meets his shifter mate Kai a platypus but again other then yeah I live with my aunt and uncle my parents died when I was 2 no explanation why he is a shifter but his inlaws are not I feel that these are not novels more like short stories but charging as much as a novel disappointed in how short these books are for the price we deserve more then 72 pages and more information on the characters if the author is going to write short stories instead of novels then she should be charging less the 3.00
Really enjoyed this book. Haven't read one of the Kontra's Menagerie series books in a while. Full disclosure - I'm only reading this one because to start the LOVING NIP series, but continuous references to Kai's group of friends introduced in this book led me back here. A water rescue led Platypus, Kai to meet his similarly unusual mate, the reclusive California condors, Dorian.
With Dorian's very alpha personality it made it difficult for him to become a full fledged member of Kontra's Menagerie. His infrequent but challenging encounters with Kontra, the alpha Grizzly and Perrin, the alpha Lion meant he could not have a permanent place with them. The unusual circumstance in this story is that the young collegiate Platypus had never met another shifter. His shock meeting several different species was amusing.
Since Kai had been raised by his Human aunt and uncle he was not familiar with any shifter habits (i.e. ease with being naked) or traditions (i.e. the gift of finding a lifelong mate). The Mate Pull was unsettling. He had some body image issues, but the older handsome man didn't seem to notice. Since he was on an out of town vacation with his close Human friends, Brock and Tyson, as well as his best friend, Korbin, before the beginning of their senior year in college, he figured he could have a little "fling". Kai never anticipated how strong and quickly his feelings would grow towards Dorian. But what happens when he has to return home?
Does Kai really believe that the much older suave man would give up his "life" to be with his so called paunchy and poor sighted "mate"? Is he really willing to go meet Kai's family? To move wherever Kai is going to college? That's too much of a fairy tale. Things like that don't happen and especially to someone like Kai.
If you enjoy yourself when you read romances about May - late December romances, newly educated shifters, the strength of the mate pull, a shifter having Human friends and a Human family. Reading about a much older shifter who has waited centuries for his mate and what he is willing to do now that he has found him. This is an amusing story that I will certainly be rereading a few times.
